You didn't walk city streets with your heart on your sleeve so why do you
Share fictional details of pictures you paint with the world?
And cultivate stories of diaphanous angel wings
Swooping down to carry you home?
And just why do you ask
For anything more?
The specifics and the characteristics are vague at their best
So you set up the lights and the camera and action you picture the scene
Where you romance in monochrome, none of this happened and never has been
And when you're sleeping your story concludes and you finally rest
And work on your tapestries of armies of deities
Charging on and defeating your foes
So just why do you ask
For anything more than this?
They take it away, they take it away
The lies wax and wane but the facts just decay
And I could have been much more than this
But in my mind when I'm anything
They see through my lies again
The sculptures I'm fashioning crumble and fade
And when I think I'm finished and all of it's mine
The defects show through even perfect designs
Is there anything more than this?

Sleeping Butterflies

The transients will blur
And the peaks and nodes converge
You'll realise how much you missed
As the detail fades away
And with every passing week
The last bit of garbled syntax in your speech
Straightens out and all the butterflies you see
They're all dead, they're not asleep
And that smell can't fill my lungs enough
Can't fit my arms round all that love
As the days turn into weeks
And the news just grows more real
There's one or two tectonic shifts
But mostly it's just creep
As I fall apart piecemeal
All the lines will start to blur
And you'll think more than you feel
And when our roles have reversed
And it's night around the world
There'll still be echoes of this girl
And that smell can't fill my lungs enough
Can't fit my arms round all that love

Curtains down, lights come up, I'd just started
Might still twitch, but I'm dead
Frightened, impressed and harmless
You shout louder instead
Won't stop talking about this
For days and for weeks
Deafening, timeless crescendos
Never reaching a peak
And through all life's peaks, troughs and plateaus,
All the time I just feel my pulse slow
Give me strength or something to lean up against
When gale force winds start to blow
Did anybody ever tell you it's pointless if you go?
I packed it in and went for the high road,
I left it and went for the ditch
My backbone just cracked under imaginary loads
I carried on in starts and in fits
A trudge back to where you had started,
A dive back to where you began
The drive and the hunger have parted
The death of an angry young man
And through all life's peaks, troughs and plateaus,
All the time I just feel my pulse slow
Give me strength or something to lean up against
When gale force winds start to blow
Did anybody ever tell you it's pointless if you go?
